Hiring
Checklist
What
kinds of information should you find out about someone you are
hiring for a key position in your company? Here’s a basic checklist
of actions you may wish to take before extending an offer of a
job:
-
Do they have a criminal record?
-
Have they sued or been sued in civil courts?
-
Do they have a history of litigation in civil courts?
-
Have they really done what they’ve claimed on their resume or
job application? You may wish to make certain that they have
attended the schools that they have claimed and gotten the degrees
and honors that they have claimed. Similarly, you can and should
check previous employers for information about their job responsibilities
and results.
-
Do they have a professional license and is it in good standing?
-
Check personal references. Usually the best way to do this is
by telephone.
-
Will the employee be driving a company vehicle? You may want
to check out their driver’s record.
-
Will they be handling company money? You may want to run a credit
report on them as well.
-
Is their social security number valid and does it belong to
them? Please do tell potential employees if you plan to run
a backround check on them. Some of these are fairly easy for
you to do yourself, others require special access to records
or a lot of digging. If it’s an important position, you may
wish to consider hiring a private investigator or an outside
firm to get some of this information. If it’s a key hire, you
will certainly want to check references yourself or have someone
that you trust do it for your business.
