Submitting to Search Engines

Someone asked me today how to get indexed by Yahoo. Although we at VentureConsult.com have not yet been successful in getting ourselves indexed, we do have an understanding of how it's done.

If you can, it's important to hand submit your site to the major search engines. Yes, there are services that will do it for you, such as Submit It. But you'll get better results doing it yourself.

About.com This great resource has a lot of information in it. You'll need to drill down to find out the best category for your site. If you provide valuable information that helps out the guide, you'll get better listing. They're paid by the traffic that comes through their category, so if you're a real expert in your field and they don't have an expert on that category, you may have just found yourself a good business opportunity. http://www.

Alta Vista Alta Vista should have you added to their site within 24 hours. Theoretically, all you have to give them is your main page and the rest of your pages will be spidered and added to the search engine. http://www.altavista.

Euroferret Only European domains will be indexed. http://www.webtop.com/

Euroseek European search engine. http://addsite. euroseek.net/ page.php?

Excite Claims site will be added to their listing two weeks after it's submitted. http://www.

GoTo Bid on key words to rise to the top of the rankings! We can't afford it, because the top ranking for "small business" today (1/11/2000) went to BenefitMall.com for a whopping $4.10 per search, but you might be able to do very well if you're in a category without a lot of competition. http://www.goto.

Hotbot Part of Lycos, claims you'll be added within 60 days of submitting http://hotbot.

Jayde Online Submit once, you'll be deleted if they think you're spamming. http://www.jayde. com/ submit.html
Look Smart Tells you how to submit, essentially you're going to have to go to the main site at http://www.looksmart.

Northern Light This is one of my very favorite search engines. Registration of your URL is free of charge. It is not necessary to submit more than one page from your website. Their crawler, Gulliver, can find your other pages by following links from this one page.

Open Directory Project This fast growing index has live, volunteer human editors who are responsible for approving sites in their area of expertise. Second to Yahoo in importance as an index site and growing quickly. "Drill down" by finding the category that best fits your site before submitting. http://www.

Scrub The Web

Starting Point Only submit to this one if you've got a good site, they're picky and want some real content included. http://www.stpt. com/submit/

WebCrawler Once your site has been submitted, it will appear in the index after two weeks. Registering your site is absolutely free of charge. http://www.web crawler.com/info/ add_url/
Yahoo! Yahoo is a special case. Pay careful attention to their requirements. Unless you have a commercial site which allows you to use the expedited review process, which gives you a decision within 2 weeks for $200, it may be six months before they pick up your site, so you may need to keep trying every month. (Any more and they think you're spamming them.) They are picky but fair if you follow the suggestions. Yahoo allows you to get listed as a featured company in the Yahoo Yellow pages for $15 per month. Businesses now have the ability to include important details in their Yahoo! Yellow Pages listings, such as hours of operation, accepted payment methods, a link to a company web site, and other such company information. Businesses that choose this new, enhanced service are promoted as "Featured Businesses" in the appropriate city or location. In addition, the Featured Business will appear bolded in the regular listing. http://docs.yahoo. com/info/suggest/

Before submitting, you may want to check out our good friend Bob Minnick's page at http://www.northernwebs.com/set/setsimjr.html and check his Meta Medic (down at the bottom of the page) to see how your page will look to the search engines. If you like his services, please consider buying some uses of his more powerful SetSimPro to help you position your page in the search engines.

Site Inspector at http://www.siteinspector.com/ can tell you how ready your site is for submission and is a good way to check ongoing performance.
