Department of Education

The Phase I awards from Education provide the basic funds for a feasibility study. Awards are for up to six months and $50,000 in Phase I.

Successful Phase I companies may apply for Phase II funding, which can be for up to two years and $300,000.

Topic Areas Include:

  • Devices or Strategies to Assist Individuals with Disabilities
  • Technologies to help individuals with disabilities transition from school to work or otherwise enhance their job potential
  • Technologies to place disabled people in vocational rehabilitation or school to work programs
  • Telecommunications and other technology for disabled individuals, their families and rehabilitation and special education professionals
  • Technology to assist disabled individuals in arts, recreation and leisure-time activities
  • Server-based authorware to provide instruction for adults with less than high school level literacy
  • Development or adaptation of technologies for all students, early childhood - post secondary
  • School Governance, Finance and Policy-making

Department of Commerce

The U.S. Department of Commerce has very technical laboratories plus the areas that we usually consider business to be about.

In Phase I, awardees can receive up to $75,000 for a 6-month study to establish the technical feasibility of a proposed project. Successful Phase I participants may compete in Phase II for up to $300,000 to support further development of the work for a period not to exceed 2 years.

On the technical side, the SBIR grants are given by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), http://www.rdc.noaa.gov/~amd/sbir.html and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), http://patapsco.nist.gov/ts_sbir/
