Review: Fish!
By Stephen C. Lundin, Ph.D., Harry Paul, and John Christensen I admit it - I'm busy and I hesitate to read the tomes available in the bookstores about personal accountability or the habits of highly effective people. I've avoided them simply because I knew I would have to wade through a lot of fodder to find the occasional gem. That's the real reason why Fish! attracted me. It covers these same topics but it's short and to the point! I was a little worried with the first few pages. "Oh, no," I thought, "not another over-simplified, pull-yourselves-up-by-your-bootstraps story!" I get a little weary of books of advice that start off with a sad story. Unfortunately, this one does just that. The rest of the book redeems itself, however, by sticking to the point and pointing out some simple pieces of advice put into perspective through two different lenses. The authors' purpose is to "boost morale and improve results" in your work environment - maybe in your life as a whole. First the authors' 4-step "system" is put into play through a fish market in Seattle. Then the same system is applied to a bank department with a bad attitude. I was intrigued with the diversity and creativity in the ideas shared while maintaining consistency with the message as a whole. The authors kept the entire book focused on the key points they wanted to deliver without wandering all around them first. The great part about Fish! is that you don't have to wade through the fodder. The gems are neatly placed and easy to find. You can take what you want from the recommendations and come back another time for more. It's a good reference tool with some practical advice. The biggie that is dispensed with regularity throughout is "Choose Your Attitude: There is always a choice about the way you do your work, even if there is not a choice about the work itself." Easier said than done, however, that's one of the messages, too. The writers are well aware that each individual must internalize this book's advice on his/her own terms. I'm a firm believer in the theory that when you're ready to hear the message it will become clear to you. You'll have to read the other 3 pieces of advice yourself. I hate giving away the plot. I enjoyed the book. It was a quick read with usable, if simplified, advice. If you enjoy the occasional inspirational poem or quick quote, you're sure to enjoy this book. The authors' try to yank on your heartstrings a little. They know that if they can strike you on an emotional level the advice will have more meaning. They're right! Rated: $$$$ ABC's
