"We are unique in that we always serve on the boards of our portfolio companies. We prefer to bet on ourselves and the teams we back, rather than on other venture firms."

New Enterprise Associates    http://www.nea.com/

Top tier VC firm with 20 successful IPOs completed 1997 - 99. Since 1978, more than 100 NEA companies have gone public; over 60 since 1991.

Focus: Healthcare and Life Sciences: Biopharmaceuticals & drug delivery, Healthcare Services, Medical Devices, Healthcare information systems and services; Information Technologies: Internet, Communications & Networking, Software, Information Services, Computers & Peripherals, Semiconductors & components, E-commerce services.

NEA invests principally in early stage companies in information technology (software, communications, electronics and information services) and medical and life sciences (biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, healthcare services, medical devices, instrumentation and information management).

NEA's initial financial commitment to a company may be from $500,000 to $6 million, depending upon the needs of the company. NEA continues to support its portfolio companies as they progress, with a total commitment of up to $15 million.

In deciding which companies to fund among the thousands it encounters, NEA has three key considerations: Will the company change the way people behave, via a unique product or service? Is there an unbounded opportunity, reflected by a large potential market, manageable competition and reasonable capital requirements? Is there a quality management team with experience and breadth? Are they people NEA can work with "through thick and thin" - especially thin?

Norwest Venture Partners    http://www.norwestvc.com/

Backed 20 companies that went to successful IPO during the 1997 - 99 time frame.

Norwest Venture Partners can: Provide vital contacts and introductions; Attract board members and additional investors; Form strategic alliances with fellow portfolio companies; Offer guidance in assembling a management team; Provide introductions to seasoned legal and financial advisers.

Focus: Broadly defined as information technology, includes enterprise software, communications systems, and communications services. Their general goal is to invest between $10 million and $15 million in their companies over time. They sometimes begin with a smaller amount (as little as $1.5 million), and have the ability to invest as much as $25 million.

Look for: Passionate and visionary founders: Do they have a record of success? Can they meet the challenges of launching a large-scale company? If they are less experienced, are they open to advice and guidance? If no management team is in place, can one be built? The marketplace opportunity: What is the market size? Is there ample room for competition? Can a sizable, lasting enterprise be built? The quality of the technology. Is the technology unique? Will it last? Do the founders have the knowledge and experience to bring it to market? The value to the customer: What problem does this company solve? How will this technology solve it? How will its value be communicated to the prospective customer?
