Wants a complete summary of the management team, both professional and edducational. Most important of the financial information is revenue forecasts and cash requirements.

Sequoia has financed more than 350 early stage technology companies. More than 100 of these companies have gone public or been sold . Sequoia has managed more than $750 million for institutional investors and invests at every stage of a private company’s development. Three of Sequoia’s Partners are immigrants.

They prefer early stage investments to be on the West Coast. They invest in post beta stage companies around Boston and Austin and will invest nationwide in more mature companies. They invest anywhere from a $50,000 seed investment to $10 million.

Look for: *Startups that will attack markets poised for rapid growth. Companies that can gain the largest market share in large markets. *Investment areas that show the potential to blossom into markets that are over $1 billion.

Incubator Sequoia has space and ability to house seed stage companies that are developing business concepts. Advantage, besides location, is the ability to use Sequoia’s network resources. Graduates of Sequoia’s incubator include Electronic Arts, PMC-Sierra and Yahoo.

$636 in the current fund for early-stage investments, $1.2 billion in the later stage sister fund Softbank Capital Partners. Investment size depends on the stage of the company, generally want to be the lead investor and end up owning @ 20% of the company post-financing. Minimum $500,000 and up to $10,000,000 or more.

Incubator: Hotbank, provides entrepreneurs with expertise and resources in finding talented managers, great legal resources, financial, information technology, investment and human rsources.

Focus: *Internet: Geographical: 65% of investments are in California, 20% are outside of California but West of Colorado, 15% are in New York and Boston

Common Reasons for Rejection: *Conflict with existing portfolio company Insufficient expertise -- the product or service lies outside their focus. *Money being raised and/or valuation does not fit in their portfolio for 'balance' reasons. *Appropriate managing director is at capacity with other deals. *They can't cover your geography sufficiently given the stage of the company’s development.

Focus: Profitable companies in the software, technology, healthcare, information services, and financial services industries. They also have extensive experience in management-led buyouts and re-capitalizations in high value-added manufacturing and service industries.

Summit has a capital base of over $3.3 billion, including equity, subordinated debt funds, and hedge funds. Summit has an industry-wide reputation as a lead investor. Their principals have financed almost 200 successful young companies which have completed initial public offerings or mergers. Their funding strength stems from partners, including major banks, corporations, pension funds, endowments, and insurance companies in the United States, Europe, and the Far East.

In addition to financial capability, their professional staff has over 200 cumulative years of industry experience. Their strategy is to seek and support outstanding management teams who typically have self-financed their companies to profitability and a leading market position.
