In 1998, the VMSI portfolio of funds (colloquially known as AT&T Ventures) was ranked as the number one telecom fund by Red Herring, and in January 2000 Forbes ranked their three year IPO performance in the top ten of all funds nationwide.

They like to invest primarily in early stage companies, but will also consider selected opportunities in later stage companies. Their initial investments are typically between $1-5 million, and they expect to exit the investment within five to seven years.

Weiss, Peck & Greer Venture Partners

14 portfolio companies brought to successful IPO 1997 - 99.

Their most recent fund was capitalized at $211 million in early 1997. Funding is provided by limited partners, including pension funds, financial institutions, industrial companies and university endowments.

Weiss, Peck & Greer Venture Partners provides capital to seed through mezzanine stage companies developing products or services in information technology and life sciences. The partnership makes investments throughout the United States.

Focus: Electronic Commerce, Software, Communications, Semiconductors, Computer Peripherals, Information Services, Biotechnology, Medical Devices, Health Care Services.

Looks for: Companies with great management, unique products or services, large potential markets and well-formulated operating plans.

Initial investments generally range from $2 to $7 million, although seed financing may be as small as $100,000. Will participate in later rounds of financing, which may result in a total investment of as much as $10 million in any one company.

Looks to achieve liquidity five to seven years after their initial investment, most often through a public offering of stock or corporate acquisition.
