What is a typical finders fee for business sale in the $3.5MM range?

I partnered with a company to purchase another company. My partner now has decide they would like to complete the purchase themselves and pay me a finders fee for my time. I am OK with this but am unsure about an amount. The total purchase will be approx $3.5 million. Thanks for your help!

1 point on the sale would be reasonable to ask for, and you should have no problem getting that assuming you were instrumental in putting the buyer and seller together. You could ask for more, and you may get it, but you might have to justify your involvement being worth that. Tip: when you settle on what you finder’s fee is going to be, put something in writing include an instruction to escrow to pay you out of the closing and make sure your partner signs it. Keep tabs on who’s handling the escrow and submit your invoice to make sure you get paid. Often times it happens that at closing somebody comes up short and they wind up asking the broker to discount their fee or agree to get paid outside escrow. So protect yourself. good luck!
